CHAPTER SEVEN
‘WHAT ON EARTH is that?’
They lay together beneath the blankets in the back of the car, snug and warm, her body wrapped in his. Making love to Cam had been so unexpected! She’d certainly not brought him out here to seduce him or anything. She’d brought him out here to see the sun rise, just as he’d wanted, but watching such beauty form before their eyes had caused them to create their own beauty, so swept up had they been in what they were seeing and feeling.
She’d watched as Cam had stared at the glowing sun, had seen how he had taken in all the colours of the sky. How his face had lit up with a yellow hue as the sun rose. She’d watched him absorb it all, trying to etch it into his memory so that he would always know what it had looked like if he were to lose his eyesight.
It had been such a moving moment, but she’d imagined that once they had seen the sun rise she would bring out her next surprise—the electronic keyboard she had stashed in the back.
She wasn’t an expert at the piano by any means—that had been Ashley’s forte—but she knew enough to teach Cam something basic. She’d pictured in her mind teaching him the piano as the sun warmed their faces and hands, high on the mountainside above Gilloch.
She flushed. ‘Oh, it’s surprise number two.’
She watched as he pulled the cover off the keyboard and then laughed at the surprise on his face.
‘It’s a keyboard,’ he said.
She laughed. ‘Yes! Well, I could hardly get a grand piano in the back of the car, could I?’
He smiled at her. ‘You don’t have to give me everything, you know. It doesn’t have to be your responsibility.’
‘It’s not. I’m doing it because I want to.’
He stared back at her, considering her explanation. ‘I don’t want to use you, Bethan. I don’t want you to feel used after all this, when I...when I die.’
‘You’re not using me... I’m using you.’
He gazed at her, confused. ‘For what?’
How could she explain? How could she tell him that she was testing herself? Seeing how she felt about getting involved with this man above any other.
She could have had anyone she wanted in this world. A man who wasn’t dying. A man who didn’t have a time limit, the way Ashley had. A man who wouldn’t hurt her by dying and leaving her behind to pick up the pieces.
But she had picked him. Because it felt right and because she couldn’t imagine being with anyone else. The more she got involved with him, the stronger she knew she was. Even if she was facing death again, having only had him for such a short time.
Perhaps it was the wrong thing to do? She didn’t know. But what she did know, and what she knew felt right, was being in his arms. Being in his embrace and letting her heart have free rein to...to love him?
‘I need to be with you, Cam.
